Spain
A practical planning guide for city breaks, rail trips, beach time, and first-time routes through Spain.
Spain at a glance
2026 planning rangesSpain is one of the easiest countries in Europe for a first big independent trip. High-speed rail is strong, food can still be good value outside the most touristed blocks, and the mix of museums, old cities, coasts, and day trips gives you a lot of flexibility.
Higher cost: Central Barcelona, central Madrid, San Sebastián, Ibiza, Mallorca in peak season, and famous beach strips in July and August.
Best for
- First-time Europe trips

Best places to base yourself
| Place | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Madrid | Best for major museums, easy day trips, and rail connections. |
| Barcelona | Best for architecture, coastline access, and a fast city break. |
| Seville | Strong base for Andalusia with flamenco, food, and walkability. |
| Valencia | Good-value mix of city, beach, and modern cultural sites. |
| Granada | Ideal for the Alhambra and a compact old-city stay. |
Food and daily spending feel
Budget €12 to €20 for a simple meal, around €20 to €40 for a casual sit-down meal, and more in central Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, and resort areas. Menu del día can still be one of the best value plays in Spain.
Getting around
Spain works best when you mix high-speed rail for the main intercity legs and local transit or walking inside the cities. Madrid to Barcelona, Madrid to Seville, and Madrid to Valencia are the classic high-speed corridors. Car rental makes more sense once you leave the major rail spine and start chasing smaller towns or coastal stretches.
When to go
April to June and September to October are the easiest balance of weather and crowd levels. July and August are hottest and most expensive in major coastal and island areas. Winter is excellent for lower hotel prices in many cities, though some resort zones feel quieter.
